This 2024 Santa Fe Area Parade of Homes entry built by Green Star Builders has similarities to their 2023 Grand Hacienda winner. It is the result of another collaboration with award-winning home designer Stephen Beili. The home is filled with impeccable one-of-a-kind details which helped this home to win the prestigious award for Best Craftsmanship again in 2024. The unassuming façade showcases the custom steel details that the company fabricates flawlessly. However, this custom home was designed for a couple with a very different site and aesthetic which is the essence of custom home building.
Overlooking dramatic vistas, this home is debonair with a bold urbane vibe. One could imagine a modern day Don Draper in residence or perhaps Tom Ford. The home’s entry sequence takes visitors through an intimate gated courtyard through a fully pocketing sliding front door opening into the main living area. The attention-grabbing full Sangre de Cristo panorama is revealed. Cherry, wenge, black Ceasarstone and polished concrete set a suave and refined tone to the interiors artfully curated by Tonia Prestupa and Megan Smith of Mason Smith. The cerise red cabinets enliven the Kitchen designed for elegant entertaining inside or outside on the partially sunken patio. The concept of eliminating the barrier between inside and outside space is expressed here through the continuity of patinaed steel joists, stuccoed walls, concrete floor and cherry ceiling. Traveling through this home, a person is reminded of exactly where one is, as Santa Fe landmarks are thoughtfully framed in its views.
The home is also incredibly green. Build Green New Mexico awarded this home a HERS score of NEGATIVE 29, meaning it is expected to produce 29% more energy than it consumes. It is all electric (with no gas brought in at all) and has a standard sized photo voltaic array, but the extreme efficiency of the house helped earn this impressive rating.
The walls are comprised of Faswall, a material with an 85 percent recycled content. The manufacturing process sequesters carbon, contributing to the health of the planet. Faswall is alkaline so it will never mold. It provides a robust thermal shell with thermal mass stacked towards the inside so it functions as a better, more modern alternative to adobe block. The material is hydrophobic, meaning it will not wick water and hygroscopic meaning it absorbs and gives off water vapor, both characteristics contributing to a healthy indoor environment for its residents. This building envelope also quiets the home, lowering the outside decibel level within.
State of the art, extremely efficient heat pump-based heating AND cooling system delivers thermal comfort through a radiant system within the floors. A full HEPA air filtration system is employed throughout the house via a centralized HRV system, purifying the indoor air and contributing to the well being of the inhabitants.
