Welders End Up in Unusual Places
Ray Santa Fe (that’s what he calls himself!) called us looking for the right guy to repair a giant mechanical puppet designed to be burned. Each fall, the local Kiwanas hosts the Burning of Will Shuster’s Zozobra. Like any village, Santa Fe has unique cultural traditions that are imbedded in our history. So, yes, we gather in a park to chant “Burn Him!” while watching a 40-foot puppet filled with shredded tax returns, divorce papers and any other variety of GLOOM. Zozobra’s arms move, his eyes roll and he does indeed burn. It’s loud, hot and a little dangerous. One year, though, the puppet’s structure needed repair and we couldn’t turn down the opportunity to be a part of Santa Fe history.
